A local police team has issued a statement after a video capturing the moment a pro-Palestine protester was arrested in Whitechapel has been shared online. 

The video was taken in Whitechapel Road yesterday (July 12) and has sparked controversy across social media platforms, including X. 

Footage shows the moment a man holding a Palestinian flag was approached by officers before an altercation breaks out. 

It appears in the video that the man was struck to the face before being laid on the floor by other responders. 

A person behind the camera can be heard saying "Why are you punching him?". 

A statement in response was posted to the Tower Hamlets Police X account. 

Supt Brittany Clarke said: "We're aware of the video and commentary online following an incident that took place in Whitechapel Road earlier today (July 12). 

"A PCSO requested urgent assistance from officer colleagues. 

"A man was arrested for assault on police and is in custody at this time."

The statement confirmed that the Directorate of Professional Standards is reviewing footage, including that captured on the body-worn video of officers present. 

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed today (July 13) that the matter had not been referred to them. 

Supt Clarke said: "I can assure local people that we are understanding of their concerns and that we will be working to establish the circumstances. 

"Officers often find themselves in dynamic, challenging situations and understand their actions will be scrutinised and any use of force must be proportionate and reasonable. 

"Where it is found that is not the case, then action will be taken. 

"I will be speaking to our local community groups to listen to their views and I ask for people's calm and patience while this important work is carried out."

Police were forced to confirm that the arrest had nothing to do with the fact that the man was holding a Palestinian flag, posting "This is not the case". 

The video captured the attention of MP Rushanara Ali who represents Bethnal Green and Stepney.

She wrote on X: "I am aware there is footage circulating on social media about an incident locally involving the police and a member of the public.

"I am deeply concerned about this and have asked the @MPSTowerHam for an urgent explanation."

We contacted the Metropolitan Police for further comment but did not receive a response.
