A major housing project set to transform a derelict gasworks into more than 1,400 homes has celebrated a key milestone.
The former East End gasworks marked the completion of the structural frame of the tallest building in phase one during a 'topping out' ceremony on the 19th floor.
Guests at the event included Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman.
Berkeley Group and its company St James are set to transform the nine-acre site, which had previously been closed off for 170 years, into a low carbon neighbourhood.
The plan includes more than 1,400 one, two, three and four-bedroom homes in the new district known as Bow Green, with 35 per cent to be classified as 'affordable' housing.
Half of the 'affordable' properties are designed as three or four-bedroom homes.
In addition to residential spaces, Bow Green will see the restoration of the heritage building at 120 Bow Common.
The neighbourhood will also include shops, restaurants, biodiverse habitats, a children’s playspace, and a network of green walkways.
The community will centre around the five-acre Bow Park, complete with an amphitheatre, habitats, and recreational spaces.
The first phase will see 82 homes built, with 54 allocated for Tower Hamlets Living Rent, while a further 28 are allocated for shared ownership, including duplex homes on Maple Mews.
Mr Rahman said: "Housing is my number one priority and so I am very pleased to see the delivery of 82 affordable homes, part of a much larger development, that will help breathe new life into this area of Bow.
"I can confirm that Tower Hamlets is open for the right kind of development.”
Dean Summers, St James and St William director, added: "Bow Green will see a long disused gasworks transform into a green and welcoming neighbourhood, with low carbon private and affordable homes alongside beautiful public spaces for everyone to enjoy."
Gateway Housing Association will own and manage the new affordable homes during the first phase of Bow Green.
The Bow Green development is set to be ready for residents to move in by 2026.
