Food safety inspectors have seen improvements at a fish and chip shop where a dead mouse and rodent droppings had been found. 

Barry's Fish Bar in Devons Road, Bromley-by-Bow, has been reinspected a week after it was visited by inspectors from Tower Hamlets Council on April 30. 

Inspectors went in after a complaint, finding a mouse in a trap and droppings inside the premises.

"There was also a gap under the rear external door which was the suspected point of entry for a mouse.

“As a result, we have reduced the premise’s hygiene rating to one star and have given them an action plan to get the situation under control."

The spokesperson added: "In this situation, the level of mouse activity did not present an imminent risk to public health and was not therefore closed."

Inspectors returned to Barry's Fish Bar on May 7 to make sure improvements were being made. 

They said: "The company has undertaken a lot of changes to prevent mice accessing the property and the cleaning schedule has been improved.

“We will continue to work with the company to ensure the work carried (out) is effective and will reinspect the premises at a later date.”

Tower Hamlets Council's website says the chip shop was recently inspected and its hygiene rating will be updated soon.

This paper contacted Barry's Fish Bar for comment but was told the owner would be back in two weeks' time.
