A developer has submitted new plans for the partial demolition of a primary school in Whitechapel to make way for office buildings up to 17 storeys high. 

The new request by Alliance Property Asia follows their last application to Tower Hamlets Council in 2021.

Their old plans included a bid to partially demolish Canon Barnett Primary School (now Mulberry Canon Barnett Primary) and redevelop it as part of a larger site to provide an office and retail tower up to 14 storeys high. 

The proposed site included 2-6 Commercial Street, 98 and 101-105 Whitechapel High Street, Commercial Street, Gunthorpe Street, all of which would be impacted.

This proposal was knocked back after councillors disapproved and Whitechapel Gallery stated the tower would be "monstrously" out of proportion with the rest of the buildings on the road. 

Concerns were raised over the height of the tower block, the impact on the conservation area, sunlight impact on neighbours, and demolition of heritage assets. 

Ex-councillor Val Whitehead previously said: "I think we all know Whitechapel is going to get some regeneration.

"But I think we're not persuaded this is the right development for this location at this time."

Alliance Property Asia's new plans for the application site however, detail their hopes to "provide buildings ranging from ground plus 17 storeys". 

If approved, it would introduce office floorspace, a community hall, would relocate and expand the existing school playground and annex, and incorporate parking.

The new application was listed to the public on February 22 and people have the opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposals until March 14.
