The body of a man was pulled from the water in Canary Wharf after he was reporting missing following a night out with friends.
Gurashman Singh Bhatia, a student from India who was studying in London, was reported missing on December 14.
The 23-year-old was last seen on CCTV in the South Quay area at around 4.20am on December 15. He was reported missing at 5.48pm.
Officers carried out extensive enquiries, including viewing CCTV, speaking to witnesses and analysing phone and financial data, and water searches were also carried out, Scotland Yard said.
On Wednesday afternoon (December 20), police divers found the body of a man in the water in South Quay.
Although formal identification has not yet taken place, his family has been informed.
The Metropolitan Police are now appealing for assistance to help piece together his last known movements.
Det Chief Supt James Conway, who is responsible for local policing in Tower Hamlets, said: "This is an extremely tragic outcome and is not the news we were hoping to give to Gurashman's family and friends. I send them my deepest condolences.
"Gurashman's death is being treated as unexpected, and while there is nothing to suggest it was suspicious, we will ensure our investigation is as thorough as possible to confirm this.
"Because of this, we are releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman that was taken before his disappearance and would like anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, December 14 and in the early hours of Friday, December 15, to contact us."
Anyone with information about Gurashman's movements should call 101 quoting the reference CAD5787/15Dec.
