In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the necessary scale of intervention and funding is still yet to be delivered.

Not least because it is overwhelmingly clear that years of austerity mean that our public services are extremely ill-prepared for dealing with this type of large-scale health risk.

It is not a time for delays, half measures or indecision.

We also need assurances that incomes of all workers will be protected and that businesses will be fully supported.

Yet it is concerning that the government’s proposals still fail to raise the level of statutory sick pay or provide for the self-employed.

On the other hand, I pay tribute to people locally who are socially distancing responsibly whilst trying to support each other the best they can and am in awe of public sector workers who are enduring the most extreme of situations to provide vital services and save lives.
